As the owner of a two year old Mastiff/Retriever mix I have been looking into to the issue of memory foam dog beds, for both my dog and to offer accurate information on this website, and have discovered some interesting facts that I thought I would share.
- About 50% of pure breed large dogs are prone to hip dysplasia, breeds such as German Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers, Rottweiller’s, Golden Retrievers and Dobermans.
- Most large dogs don’t show symptoms of hip dysplasia until they’re middle aged. The only way to know for sure your dog doesn’t have this problem is to get x-rays done and have your Vet analyze the results. Of course if you have dealt with a reputable breeder then they will disclose any issues with hip dysplasia.
- Memory foam dog beds are recommended by many breeders of large dogs at any age. The fact that they support the dog’s joints properly and don’t inhibit the blood circulation will ensure good bone health.
Ultimately it’s up to the individual dog owner to make a decision on whether these beds are best for their dog. Obviously your Vet would recommend one if you have an elderly dog with arthritis but I had not really considered them necessary for a younger healthy dog.
I welcome your comments and any insights.

Measuring your Dog for their Dog Bed
When shopping for a dog bed it is very important that you get the size right. A general rule of thumb is to measure your dog from head to tail and add 12″ to that total. This will ensure that they have enough to room to not only curl up but to stretch out too.
Memory Foam Mattresses
Large dogs, older dogs and arthritic dogs have special needs and will enjoy the comfort and support of a memory foam mattress. Vets will often recommend memory foam as it moulds to the contours of your dogs body and relieves pressure on the joints and large bones. This is important for large breeds and infirm dogs as it improves circulation and will prevent them from waking up stiff or in pain.
Dog Bed Covers
An important consideration for your dogs bed is the type of cover. Generally it should be removable so you can give it a run through the washing machine to keep it clean and fresh. Outdoor dog beds are made of materials that can be wiped down although some of them are machine washable which makes life a little easier. You should definately consider a durable material that can stand-up to your dogs claws and if your dog is a chewer, this should be taken into account too.
Dog Bed Placement
Your dog has a natural instinct to make a den for itself, a place where it feels safe and secure. Bolster dog beds or nesting type dog beds that have soft sides give your dog a feeling of comfort and security and can be placed almost anywhere. If you have a larger dog that has a mattress style bed try putting it in quiet corner where it will be den-like with walls on two sides.
